Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information without your permission. They can use this is information to commit crimes, such as fraud. They can also use these information to gain financial benefits. Thieves can also use your information to open your personal account and make unauthorized transaction using your information. Victims of identity theft often end up with damaged credit, incorrect information added to their records, or wrongful arrest. (Hussain, 2024). According to The Identity Theft Research Center (ITRC) Annual Data Breach Report, 2024 had the second-highest number of data compromises in the U.S. in a single year since the ITRC began tracking data events in 2005, down just one percentage point from the record set in 2023. There was a total of 1.35 trillion victim notices issued including five mega breaches resulting in 100 million to 560 million victim notices issued each, or 83 percent.

Identity theft can lead to serious dangers, not just financially but also personally. It can ruin your reputation by posting or spreading data using your name, pictures and personal information. Criminals may use your personal information to steal money, commit fraud, and even apply loans under your name. This act of cruelty leads to a victims to get accuse of something they didn’t do. Victims of identity theft also are getting in debt to loans they didn't take. Identity theft also makes victims lost trust that affects their future opportunities like getting a job, scholarships, or going to different countries. Victims may also face legal problems if their identity is used in crimes, and the process of recovery often leads to stress and anxiety (Federal Trade Commission, 2023). According Bureau of Justice Statistics during the year 2021 report indicated that 10% of identity theft victims experienced severe distress, financial impact and physical harm.
